World. In what analysts are calling the “Woodstock of the 21st Century,” over 50 million people across the United States and beyond unplugged from Big Tech platforms last month, marking the largest coordinated walkout in human history. Alternatively dubbed the Digital Exodus, Big Tech Walk Out and Delete the Oligarchy, the movement triggered massive drops in daily active users across Meta, X, Google, Amazon, Open AI, and Apple services. According to a former Google employee, major advertisers immediately panicked, wondering who else would be willing to harvest private data at scale without consent, if not Google or Meta. Meta alone lost 23% of its daily active users. And within 24 hours of its April earnings call, its stock had dropped 18%—soon followed by Alphabet, Apple and Amazon. But more important than the impact on abstract numbers, which some claim are more imaginary than Imagine the News, was the impact on people’s real world experiences: people talking at the dinner table again, texting to people instead of posting at them, meeting in person instead of zooming, and experiencing the mildly disorienting sensation of having a feeling of emptiness without a quick fix.
